Across Bali, tonnes of plastic enters the ocean via the many waterways and streams. Traditionally the Balinese used the waterways for their waste disposal which was kind of OK when it contained bamboo and other organic material but now most of the waste contains plastic which is causing great harm to the oceans. The problem gets worse in the wet season. The Keramas Village has systematically cleaned each waterway of plastics before the wet season. As major sponsor of the Corona Bali Pro, Corona have brought significant global awareness to the issue of ocean plastic and have supported the initiative of cleaning up Keramas village as a first step to eradicating this problem in Indonesia. Parley Non-profit organisation Parley has been instrumental in helping Keramas villagers reduce plastic pollution, including donating 20,000 reusable shopping bags made from recycled plastic. WSL Through its WSL Pure program, the WSL has played a massive role in raising awareness about plastic pollution. The WSL has also held events at Keramas to raise awareness and provide education about plastic pollution. Hotel Komune Since its inception, Komune has aimed to be a plastic free enterprise, as well as to minimise its impact on the surrounding environment. Today, Komune has eliminated single-use plastics, and conducts daily beach and river clean ups to keep plastic out of the office. Komune Co-Owner, Tony Cannon, has also donated $5k for a scooter to help the community manage plastic waste. EDDE EDDE bikes are electric scooters made from 100% recycled plastic. Launching soon in Indonesia, they hope to demonstrate the value in using recycled plastic to make every day products as well as helping to reduce CO2 emissions from the millions of scooters in SE Asia. But it’s not enough.
