Cleaning up plastic one village at a time.

Let’s make every village in Bali self- sufficient when it comes to waste management.

We’re on a mission to help every village in Bali clean up the plastic from their waterways and their beaches. We’re starting small with Keramas Village in beautiful East Bali, with support from Hotel Komune and other local businesses.

The Mission

One Village Plastic Free

Our Goal:

Our goal is simple: to raise AU$50,000 to fund a garbage truck and bins (recycling & rubbish) for the Keramas community that will help clear plastic waste from the village waterways and take it to a local facility to be recycled.

Hotel Komune has generously offered a trip to Bali to one lucky supporter.

The Plastic Problem

Plastic pollution in the ocean is out of control. Across Bali, tonnes of plastic enters the ocean via the many waterways and streams.

Traditionally the Balinese used the waterways for their waste disposal which was kind of OK when it contained bamboo and other organic material but now most of the waste contains plastic which is causing great harm to the oceans.

The problem gets worse in the wet season.

The Keramas Village has systematically cleaned each waterway of plastics before the wet season. The energy of Chief Gusti Sudar and volunteer locals are amazing and it’s inspiring to see the clean waterways.

There is more to do in Keramas to solve the problem of plastics…

1

Local businesses are working with villagers to reduce plastic pollution with a sustainable recycling facility

2

Provide all villagers with reusable shopping bags to prevent the re-entry of plastic shopping bags

3

Raise money to purchase a truck which will pick up plastic rubbish one day a week and take it to be recycled locally

The Big Picture

We hope that once complete, this project will spread to other villages around the island and other local businesses and their networks can easily get behind their village and support some small-scale infrastructure and equipment to help collect and sort their waste.

If Keramas Village can do it, we hope every village in Bali and Indonesia can.

Help Keramas Village lead the way in sustainability and show other villages what’s possible when the community, local businesses and their customers put their minds together.

Donate your small change to make a big change in Keramas.

Local Business Support

Corona

The crew at Corona have been instrumental in promoting a plastic free ocean via the "100 Islands Protected"  programme.

As major sponsor of the Corona Bali Pro, Corona have brought significant global awareness to the issue of ocean plastic and have supported the initiative of cleaning up Keramas village as a first step to eradicating this problem in Indonesia.

Parley

Non-profit organisation Parley has been instrumental in helping Keramas villagers reduce plastic pollution, including donating 20,000 reusable shopping bags made from recycled plastic.

WSL

Through its WSL Pure program, the WSL has played a massive role in raising awareness about plastic pollution.

The WSL has also held events at Keramas to raise awareness and provide education about plastic pollution.

Hotel Komune

Since its inception, Komune has aimed to be a plastic free enterprise, as well as to minimise its impact on the surrounding environment.

Today, Komune has eliminated single-use plastics, and conducts daily beach and river clean ups to keep plastic out of the office.

Komune Co-Owner, Tony Cannon, has also donated $5k for a scooter to help the community manage plastic waste.

EDDE

EDDE bikes are electric scooters made from 100% recycled plastic. Launching soon in Indonesia, they hope to demonstrate the value in using recycled plastic to make every day products as well as helping to reduce CO2 emissions from the millions of scooters in SE Asia.

But it’s not enough. Help us take the next step towards a sustainable Keramas and donate what you can.
